The last 8 weeks working as an intern at Honeywell Employee’s Club has been life awarding experience. I have made new friends, networked with co-workers and gained a new skill which I hope will guide me in my career path. I have learned corporate world work and even though it looks like a scary place I am hope I can become one of its newest members. I felt I have grown as a person and strayed from my comfort zone. Since my daughter’s birth I’ve been a stay at home mom and worked out of my home. I got out of pajamas into work clothes and I enjoyed the feeling of being accomplished. I know now I can go to work daily and not feel guilty for leaving my daughter at daycare anymore. The Honeywell Employee’s Club has allowed me to expand my skills in marketing, public relations and customer service. These skills will make me more marketable to future employers. Although, internship was hard work, it was a positive experience. I was able to use what I’ve been taught in the class room into the real world. I am thankful for this experience and I am one step closer to graduation!

Improve
The Honeywell Employee’s Club is I believe to the political. The store brings in almost $10 thousand weekly in sale but management is never happy with the progress the store is making. There are also employees who feel the store does not fit their needs and files a complaint to human resources, which puts the damper on the success of the Employee’s Club. The organization as a whole is outstanding but there is a lot of red sticky tape and tip toeing which needs to be done to get the job done. I believe there are too many people running the Honeywell Employee’s Club; i.e., accountants, managers, committees and associates all have a say which should go on. As an old saying goes “there are too many chiefs not enough Indians”. The matrix of leadership should be reduced to few personnel to provide efficient productivity and less hassle.
Although the Honeywell Employee’s Club has an interdisciplinary outline, personal bias hurts the program as a whole. Associates I believe are not open to change and are prejudice to new ideas or working in an interdisciplinary way. I order to improve this process I would bring in new associates and take all new ideas and thoughts into consideration. While the procedures will be followed as mandated, my main goal would be to add color to a black and white practice.

Interview
I Josie Morgan (JM), have interviewed Dee Hernandez (DH), Administrative Assistant to Honeywell Employees’ Club.
JM - What types of challenges do you face?
DH- Moving forward with new technology or new process. Being in a secure area and out of site from my peers, sometimes changes are made without included those who work the process daily.
JM - How do you deal with deadline stress, difficult people, and internal politics?
DH- What stress, I don’t deal with much down here. When a deadline is given, I make sure I start the job right away, communicate with customer on my progress, and complete the task before or by the deadline time frame. I have a good relationship with my customer, that’s not a problem. Internal politics will be at any work place. I myself chose not to make it part of my work life or my home life.
JM- What do you like or dislike about your position?
DH- There is nothing I dislike about my position. I love my positions and the challenges I’m faced with each day. Each day is different and I look forward to see what I can help to improve or what I can learn.
JM - How do you feel about working with others?
DH- I enjoy working with others. I think it’s good to have someone working with you so that you can bounce off ideas, suggests on how to improve process or just learn how to be a team player.
JM- Do you enjoy working on group projects?
DH- Yes. Anytime you can get on a team to improve process and eliminate waste, it’s worth it. With technology moving forward, it’s a good idea to join a team to understand what changes will be coming.
JM- What is your ideal work environment?
DH- Your work environment is what you make it. I believed that if you want to succeed and have a great place to work, you can have it. Keeping a positive attitude, deal with changes, and open to new ideas all plays into a good work environment.
JM- How has your education and experience prepared you for your current job?
DH- Over the years, most of my experience came by taking ownership of a function and using the tools (green belt, Six Sigma) to create a process or help improve a process.
JM- After whom do you model your work behavior? Or who do you most respect?
DH- For myself, it my father. With very limited education, his hard work and dedication to learn what he could, that success gave him opportunity to into various positions within the company he worked for. He was motivated to succeed.
JM- Have you reached out to mentors and has the mentorship system worked for them?
DH- Not really.

Shadow
I have chosen to shadow Dee Hernandez; she is the assistant to Martin Fox the Coordinator and Events Manager at Honeywell. When Dee arrives to work she checks her email which usually has large amount of request from customers, vendors or task which Martin has assigned to her. This process usually take couple hours, due to the phone ringing or side distractions which may come up. Then Dee checks her voice messages and returns calls. It seems once she this process is done it is already lunch time. On Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s she manages the Tempe and Phoenix Employee Store’s. When Dee walks into store, she completes the opening procedures and instructs me to open the doors to our customers. During store hours she is consistently training in running the cash register, store products and sign up for upcoming events. Once the store is secured Dee returns to her desk she creates flyers for discounted tickets for Sun Splash and Amazing Jakes. Dee and Martin attends Golf meeting to review the remaining golf tournaments this year and how to increase participation among Honeywell Employees. After the meeting Dee arrives back to her desk and tries to complete any other time sensitive request and then she leaves for the day.
Shadowing Dee was an eye opening experience. I did not know the amount of work she has and her day is never dull. One thing I did notice was she was always on the move and from what I saw; she never had time to take break to collect her thoughts. She ate her lunch at her desk while continuing to work. I tried to help as much as I could to reduce her work load but she was still on the go. Overall my shadowing of Dee Hernandez was an excellent experience.

Career
I feel I have picked the perfect applied study which meet my personality, work goals and is fun. I am a people person and likes the challenge of not knowing what is going to happen on a daily bases. Although this might sound too perfect, I feel my personal life would not allow me to correctly fit into this position. As most mothers would feel, their children come first and working as associate with Employees’ Club will take up many evening, weekends and traveling. I love being a part of an organization which helps others by boosting their moral but I feel little torn in between my professional career and my responsibilities at home.
Although I work for sister company of Honeywell, I feel comfortable in my current position. It allows me to work off site and telecommute from home. I believe it is a perfect position for a young mother and college student.
My future goals is to work with a non-profit or large organization assisting in creating and running events for children, disabled or senior citizens. I want to bring a smile to someone’s face by celebrating someone who is normally set aside by society. My applied study is giving me the experience needed to complete my goals. I am meeting new people, mangers and when I’m ready to expand or move within the company I will have contacts. I’m also learning how the corporate world works.
I would be interested working in educational settings. I did consider becoming an elementary teacher when I first started Arizona State University but I found Organizational Studies fit me better as a major.

Theories and Concepts
The four theories or concepts which I have learned through the context of the college coursework are Method, Grand Theory, Organizational Theory and Narrow Ranged Theory.
Method concerns how one conducts research, analysis data or evidence, test theories and creates new knowledge. This concept could be related to hypothesis, as a researcher may have the idea that all college seniors have credit problems. The researcher could use a method of collecting date on college senior’s credit scores and his results will determine if his hypothesis is correct. In applying Method to my applied study at Honeywell Employee’s Club, I could do an analysis of which month of the year does the most Disneyland Tickets are being sold and which months are the slowest ticket sales.
Grand Theory is a general analysis that attempts to explore and explanation interrelationships between phenomena that extent beyond the borders of two or more disciplines. This theory brings two different ideas into one, as why does women receive lower wages than their male peers. This idea has an economical and feminism discipline concept. In applying Grand Theory to my applied study I could attempt to explain the low number women golfers who participate in tournaments.
Organizational Theory is the systematic study and careful application of knowledge about how people - as individuals and as groups - act within organizations. This theory is the base of my major, Organizational Studies. An example in applying Organizational Theory in my applied studies is how productive is different ethnicities working together on Hometown Solution Project (community service) with disabled veterans.
Narrow Range Theory is designed to account for relative small number of phenomena or produce insight into specific problem. This theory researches the insight of the number of low test scores during Greek Week. as studying is being deferred for social commitments. An example in applying Narrow Range Theory in my applied study, I would research the number of employees who have made complaints about Phoenix Club House Store in lieu of poor store hours, being once a week for three hours.

Week 2
Honeywell Aerospace is a large organization which has a huge impact in our lives. They create parts for commercial airplanes, military equipment and home temperature gages. Their work has an interdisciplinary effect in bring knowledge of different fields to solve a problem. In working with Employees’ club there are many different events, merchandise selling and vendors’ production which can occur. In helping signing up fellow employees’ for upcoming golf tournament at ASU, I learned the process of planning the event, advertising and registering golfers. This allowed me to be confident in my work in learning how follow the proper procedures to ensure the event is a success. Thus for the next event, I can hope to have feeling “I know what to do or expect”. As not all things run the same, Honeywell’s plethora of functions I will be certain I can get the job done.
In Honeywell being a large corporation with sites all over the world, their organizational structured is will defined. There hierarchic of presidents, board members, stock holders and employee’s had a say in the success of the company and how the company is ran. Disciplines are represented by department. Each department is responsible for different part of the puzzles which makes up Honeywell. As Employees’ club falls under Human Resources Department, there main goal is keep up the moral of the employee’s. Their projects define their work in how they try to keep the moral high which in turn provides high productivity for the workers, which makes money for organizations.

Intro
Hello, my name is Josie Morgan. I am a senior at ASU majoring in Organizational Studies, hoping and praying I graduate in December 2010. I have chosen my major, Organizational Studies due to its unique features of combining business, human resources and managerial skills in to one concentration. As I am a people person, I love to work in group setting solving problems or organizing events to improve the moral of employees or public. With the several years I spend in the military, I believe I hold a strong sense of leading others into doing great things.
I am currently completing my internship at Honeywell Aerospace, Employees’ Club. The Employees’ club organizes and plans corporate events, community service projects and provides their employees’ with discounted priced tickets for sporting events, water parks and amusement parks. During my first week of being part of the employees’ club team, I assisted in signing up golfers for an upcoming golf tournament at ASU Karsten Golf Course. I also supported the club house in Phoenix and Tempe stores in selling Honeywell merchandise. My responsibilities shadow which I have been studying in working within a large organization trying to make it better while thinking outside of the box.
After graduation, I anticipate to gain a position as a regular employee at Honeywell. I hope to expand my knowledge which I have gained through study into workforce. I want to enrich my life with work which makes a difference in people’s lives. As Honeywell is major competitor in transportation, military and home furnishing, I want to feel I helped made someone life simpler or safer.
The next two months should be an exciting and challenging but up to the challenge.
